"Safari"

Safari (1992) The Breeders

Safari is Kelly Deal's first record with The Breeders and Tanya Donelly's last. It features and early version of "Do You Love Me Now?" which would later appear on 1993's Last Splash LP. "Don't Call Home" is fragmented in the same style as "Cannonball".

A video was made for "Safari"; it looks like one of those trippy band performances from the late 60s and early 70s. The Breeders performed the Who cover "So Sad About Us" on David Lettermans's old show without TD.

It's easy to think that some or all of these songs are directed at former bandmates; I don't know.

Anyway, all of the songs are good and it would be nice to see this EP re-released and packaged with Pod. Both records are short so there'd be room to add some (or maybe all) of the Pod demos too. I'd buy that.

For that matter, it'd be great if Last Splash got a deluxe re-release that included all the B-sides and extra tracks recorded around that time.

Imagine a bonus disc with:
1. Cro-Aloha
2. Lord of the Thighs
3. 900
4. Hoverin'
5. I Can't Help It
6. Grungae
7. Shocker In Gloomtown
8. Climbing the Sun
9. Stuck Pig
10. Saints (single version)
11. New Year (demo)

I'd leave off "Do You Love Me Now Jr" as I don't like J Mascis's vocals on that track.
